Irene Pamblanco Esteve (LLM, MA) is a public international law and human rights lawyer. Currently, she is a doctoral candidate in public international law at the University of Vienna where she also works as a university assistant (Prae Doc) to Professor Ursula Kriebaum.
Before joining the university, Irene had, among others, worked at Lindeborg Counsellors at Law in the legal representation of individuals before international legal mechanisms such as the United Nations Human Rights Committee (London, United Kingdom); provided legal assistance to governments in the negotiation of resolutions at the United Nations (Nairobi, Kenya); drafted judgments at the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France); conducted open-source investigation on crimes against humanity as part of an NGO (Madrid, Spain); and guided law students at the University of Notre Dame in the process of representing victims of human rights abuses in the international legal system (Indiana, United States).
Besides these practical experiences, Irene has been since 2021, Rapporteur to the Oxford Reports on International Human Rights Law, where she writes headnotes on decisions rendered by the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Recently, she has also participated in a Commentary for the European Union Model Bilateral Investment Treaty where she has co-authored two chapters with Professor Christina Binder.
Irene has studied her law degree at ESADE Business & Law School (Barcelona, Spain) where she was awarded a Distinction in Human Rights and a ‘Scholarship to Talent’. She later complemented her legal background with a Master of Arts in EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium). During her studies she participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, volunteered for a local NGO specialized in social inclusion, and interned for a Justice of the Peace in Panajachel, Guatemala, where she researched on the topic of alternative dispute resolution techniques, particularly on mediation.
Her interest and expertise include international human rights law, international environmental law, international investment law and international criminal law.
