On 17 January 2025, the Hague Academy of International Law honoured Professor Ignaz Seidl-Hohenveldern for his contribution to public international law. He was professor at the law faculty of the University of Vienna in the 1980s concluding his international career at the place where he started his academic career with his Habilitation on international confiscations and expropriations (Internationales Konfiskations-und Enteignungsrecht, Tübingen, 1952). A member of the International Law Association, the Institut de droit international and other prestigious societies, he enjoyed the rare honour of being invited to teach at the Hague Academy three times (1968 “The Impact of Public International Law on Conflict of Law Rules on Corporations”, 1979 “International Economic Soft Law” and 1986 the general course entitled “International Economic Law”). He showed his devotion and attachment to this institution by leaving a substantial amount of money to be used for scholarships for attendees of the Hague courses. At the memorial event both the president, Diego P. Fernández Arroyo, and the secretary general of the Hague Academy, Jean-Marc Thouvenin, paid tribute to Professor Seidl-Hohenveldern. This was followed by the Austrian ambassador Bert Theuermann and Professors Nico Schrijver, Malgosia Fitzmaurice and August Reinisch who underlined Professor Seidl-Hohenveldern’s lasting impact in the field.
